re you down for an adventure? Underground Rome - a terrifying labyrinth where nothing is expected or reasonable. The tomb of a saint, a lake, a church, an ossuary, or a skeleton warning you ““What you are, I was; what I am, you will be.” It’s a kingdom of shadows where you never know what to expect. They tell you about people lost and who never returned, others who were lost but reappeared 3 days and 3 nights later, not in Rome but in Anzio, 30 km away. They speak of 700 km of explored labyrinths, but they believe there to be many thousands more, an immense multi-leveled spider’s web spreading under Rome and the surrounding areas.

Almost every recent church in Rome has a secret underground level, not as deep as the catacombs, but often more fascinating. If united together, they would create a city, another world full of secrets and mysteries of underground churches, perilous stairs, ruined walls, and the smell of saints and bones.

During the tour

Tour the catacombs of St. Callixtus without ever discovering the real end, your way barred by a tunnel leading into a tunnel, leading into yet another tunnel; four levels and 20 meters deep. The catacombs are famous for the crypts of popes buried there and the body of St. Cecilia. Or, venture into the catacombs of Saint Sebastian, an immense labyrinth, much of which is still believed to be undiscovered. Witness a fascinating central hall with three marvelous underground churches, ornately decorated with plaster and frescoes.

Be enamored by the catacombs of Domitilla, one of the vastest catacombs of the city. Visit a terrifying maze of tunnels, labyrinths and galleries, an underground basilica and 150,000 tombs.

Next travel back in time again and explore the three subsoil layers of the Basilica of San Clemente.

Of course, our tour of the macabre abysses of Rome would not be complete without a visit to the Capuchin Crypt, one of the most well known curiosities of Rome. Feel bewitched by the myriads of vertebrae, skulls, crossbones and other bones that form wondrous and almost joyous rococo and baroque style decorations.
