  • This walking tour concentrates on areas close to the Colosseum and Palatine Hill, areas right in the heart of the city and yet surprisingly unknown to the majority of tourists. We call it Tesori Nascosti - Hidden Treasures.

Our hidden treasures include the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. A church which is home to the remains of one of the most romantic men in history, an unusual crypt, and an ornate fountain La Bocca Della Verità - the Mouth of Truth. There are quite a few stories associated with the mouth of truth, a round piece of marble from Turkey, but those will be for our guide to tell you. Our romantic visitors will surely head for a glass display case where the skull and bones of St. Valentine, the god of happy marriages and love, are on display. And for those guests who are not looking for love, the history of a Roman temple dedicated to Hercules transformed into a Greek church, and an ancient crypt will prove very interesting indeed.

Our next stop, the Aventine Hill, is probably one of the most relaxing spots from which to observe the heart of the city. After all the hustle and bustle below, stand on the terrace and admire the magnificent views over the rooftops, domes, and waters of the Tiber.

The Piazza Dei Cavalieri di Malta is not just a treasure because of its engravings and obelisks, but also for its secret view. Follow in true Roman style and peek through the keyhole of a door leading into the House of the Knights. Through this keyhole you can see a wonderful view of the dome of St. Peter framed by an avenue of trees.

Our final hidden treasure is The Basilica di San Clemente, this is a church dedicated to Pope St. Clement, but it also has a nickname, 'the lasagna church'. Find out why on a visit to a building that has evolved from a 1st century private home and the site of a 3rd-century temple for secret Christian worship to a 4th-century church and then a 12th-century basilica.

This ancient church has a lot of history to tell and we’ll help tell it.
