Our new tour offers you the opportunity to visit the ‘Sotterranei’, the belly of the monster, the underground area of the site. We will visit the Belvedere ‘beautiful to see’ on the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors for, as the name suggests, some beautiful views.
We start our tour behind locked gates; this area can only be visited with a guide. Once inside, you will descend into the underground area known as the Hypogeum, a warren of secret passages once under the stage. It was the place where, in darkness, the gladiators and animals prepared themselves for what was to come. This is a great place to visit, and during this tour you will see reconstructions of the mechanisms used to send the wild animals up onto the stage. It really makes your imagination come alive.
We then travel up to the Colosseum’s Belvedere, the upper layers. The 3rd, 4th and 5th floors were reserved for the poor and women, and just like theatres today, these were the cheap seats. Those who sat here felt detached from the action in the arena, it was a long way away, but today it’s a different story as there are many visitors who want to visit this restricted area to see the views!
This tour is a guided tour of the restricted areas of the site, but your ticket also includes entry to the Colosseum itself where you can visit the main areas unguided.
For groups of up to 25 people.
